2012-05-03
2012-05-04 12:00

The ICP workshops series is organised twice per year under the auspices of the European Ph.D. Network on International Climate Policy (ICP). It aims to offer doctoral candidates the opportunity to present their research ideas and results, receive feedback, and exchange information and assistance in an informal setting. Contributions of Ph.D. students from all disciplines working on topics relevant to climate policy are invited. Participation is free of charge, but participants are expected to cover their travel and accommodation expenses.

We seek to bring together 30-40 Ph.D. students, who present and discuss their work. Each presentation will be followed by comments of a fellow Ph.D. candidate and a discussion of the paper. There will be a small number of places available for participants without own presentation. However, active involvement is required. Each participant may be asked to serve as a discussant for a presentation in a related field.

More information on the workshop and the Call for Papers – closing the 29th of Jauary! – is given here: http://www.wipo.uni-freiburg.de/tagungen/24icpworkshop

3rd Global Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation, May 12-15, 2012, Bonn - Germany

2012-05-12
2012-05-15 12:00

Bonn, Germany.

While cities make efforts to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and increase urban energy-efficiency, they are at the same time vulnerable. Climate change is already leading to an increased frequency of extreme weather events bringing floods, landslides and droughts while melting glaciers threaten the drinking water supply of large cities and sea-level rise imperils many coastal communities. Many of these climate change impacts will be – and in some cases already have been – felt directly at the local level. Local governments have a responsibility to protect their people, property, and resources. With the economies, livelihoods, safety and character of their communities at stake, cities are harnessing their visionary leadership and policy tools to increase resilience as they prepare for the future.

The World Congress on Water, Climate and Energy, May 13-18, 2012, Dublin - Ireland

2012-05-13
2012-05-18 12:00

The International Water Association (IWA) is a professional membership association of leading water professional with over 10,000 members in 130 countries. Recognising the importance interlinked importance of water, climate and energy IWA’s Water, Climate and Energy (WCE) programme addresses both the adaptation and the mitigation aspects of climate change and water. It is at the forefront in raising awareness of the critical WCE linkages within the water sector and advocating at the United Nations COP series focussed on the urban water industry in both developed and developing countries.

The Congress will explore the topics of resilient and sustainable cities with a focus on climate change adaptation and mitigation. The challenges of climate change adaptation and incorporating uncertainty into the city vision and infrastructure will be discussed together with the impacts and responses of climate change on water resources. Reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, operating in a carbon constrained world and a focus on renewable energy including practical applications and integration in to the energy mix will be covered.

Solutions to these challenges, including the role of technologies and smart networks will also be a central theme. Recognising that technology is only part of the solution the conference will also address the economic, political and regulatory aspects of water, climate and energy.

2nd International Symposium - Effects of Climate Change on the World's Oceans, May 15-19, 2012, Yeosu - Korea

2012-05-15
2012-05-19 12:00

ICES, PICES and IOC joined forces in 2008 for the first global ocean symposium (Gijón, Spain) and it attracted 400 scientists from 48 countries. This second look at the "Effects of Climate Change on the World's Oceans" will lead us through many issues of the role of climate change on the oceans: sea level rise, changes in thermo-haline ocean circulation, acidification, oligotrophy of temperate seas, changes in species abundance, distribution and phenology, loss of biodiversity, all of which will have serious implications for marine living resources, etc. This symposium aims to bring together experts from different disciplines to exchange observations, results, models and ideas at a global scale and to discuss the opportunities to mitigate and protect the marine environment and its living resources.

The 32nd annual conference of the International Association For Impact Assessment, Energy Future: The Role of Impact Assessment , 27 May - 1 June 2012, Porto—Portugal

2012-05-27
2012-06-01 12:00

A defining issue throughout human history has been how societies have pursued the supply and management of energy. Our view of the world and the world economy over the last 3-4 human generations has been shaped by assumptions of infinite energy supplied primarily by fossil fuels. Impact assessments have scrutinized thousands of energy projects, but few have considered the long-term future supply and sources of non-renewable and renewable energy as critical to decision-making. Now, however, the basic principle of limitless energy is under challenge.

Impact assessment has proven to be a powerful evolving tool able to incorporate environmental, social and health concerns, among others, in decision-making processes. More integrated approaches are being tested for biodiversity and climate change. Understanding the future of energy must also be one of the highest priorities for impact assessment professionals.

What is the role of impact assessment on future global, national and local energy decisions and choices? How can we tackle the environmental and social risks that will appear as a result of our quest for the development, production and management of new energy sources?
